St Mary Magdalene Church
Within the calm interior of St Mary Magdalene Church stand two of Robert Kiddey’s most contemplative works: the Cross of Nails (below) and Pietà (right), portraying Mary cradling the body of the crucified Christ. These sculptures speak to a formative period in Kiddey’s life.
As a young man, Kiddey travelled through Eastern Europe, where he encountered artistic traditions and political movements that would shape both his world view and creative direction. Religious iconography left a particular impression, and its influence can be seen clearly in these church commissions — works of quiet power, crafted with reverence and detail.
Currently St. Mary Magdalene Church is undergoing restoration and is closed to the public. As soon as access is available, we will add some photographs of the exhibits onto this webpage. For more information, please visit the website www.stmnewark.org
