Castle House

Outside Castle House stand four monumental panels created by Robert Kiddey - an impressive ensemble of twelve sculpted stone blocks, originally commissioned in 1957 for Wilford Power Station in Nottingham.

Each panel depicts a different aspect of electricity generation, reflecting both the technological optimism of the post-war period, and Kiddey’s ability to merge industrial themes with sculptural elegance. Together, the twelve stones weigh an estimated twelve tonnes, with each panel standing around two metres high and one metre wide.

Now re-sited in Newark, these sculptures continue to command attention, not just for their scale, but for the clarity and strength of their design. They serve as a lasting reminder of Kiddey’s contribution to public art, and his talent for creating works that speak to both local and national narratives.

These sculptures are always visible.
